BIOGRAPHY
A State Representative, an artist, a photographer, a mother, a friend, a daughter and a wife, a board member, a blogger, a family archivist, a traveler; hard worker, and all around easy to get along with artist.
Debra was born in 1963, in Bitburg Germany, to Richard and Linda Hill. Debra is a citizen and resident of the U.S. She attended The Atlanta College of Art.
Winner of national and international awards, she has won 9 IPA Awards in a single year, Canon Best of Photography, the PX3 in Paris. She has covered subjects in Jamaica West Indies, the US, and Egypt.
Debra Friedens Rasta works have been included into the Smithsonian collections. This includes sixteen (16) portrait photographs to date. A second group of photographs are in progress and or final preparations (documentary data).
At four (4) years old, Debra stood on chairs in her fathers' darkroom and helped develop photographs.
(see photo right of Debra and her father Athens, GA 1968)
Her family owned The Scott Gallery (Atlanta, GA) in the 1970's, and are avid collectors of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, silver gelatin prints, and collectible photography through today. This rich history and hands on education molded her young mind to absorb the spectrum of compositions, content, history, and photographic processes.
At the age of 17, Debra went to Egypt with a new Minolta 35mm film camera. Turning the camera away from the tourist sights towards the people, she returned with her first body of work in the field. Young boys in a Madrasah, a boy proudly holding his goat, a young girl, exposing a small tattooed Christian cross on her arm, pleading in a tiny voice, and huge dark eyes, "baksheesh, baksheesh."
At 19, in 1982, Debra met Annie Leibovitz during a joint exhibition of her father, Richard Hill, Annie Leibovitz and Philip Pearlstein. Meeting and talking with Ms. Leibovitz crystallized for Debra women could be influential and important photographers. Also confirming that a photographer can be multifaceted in their work scope whether photojournalism to commercialism.
In 1990, at the age of 26 years old Debra, then Debra Mills (D), won a seat as a State Representative in the State of Georgia. The 2nd youngest woman representative to date, her work focused on: child abuse, domestic violence, and senior issues. Her work was officially recognized and honored by the Georgia General Assembly in 2001, passing a Resolution naming the "Debra Mills Commemorative Bridge" in recognition of her work.
She was appointed by the Cherokee County Commission to the Cherokee County Ethics Board (GA) and currently serves as a member.
She is married to Kevin Frieden, and has two grown adult children, Christopher (b. 1984)and Thomas (b.1989), and one grandson, Aiden (b.2008). They live in metropolitan Atlanta, GA.
Debra currently uses a Mamiya 645 film, vintage Polaroid, Fuji, Canon, Minolta, and Nikon cameras.
Each photograph is captured with care, compassion and sensitivity.
"When my earthly eyes make their final close, I will leave behind a lifes work of the people who shared with me and my lens, their most intimate selves. To fossilize people in time - forever; this will be my ultimate gift." -Debra Frieden

The West Indies Rasta portraitures will be unveiled, and exhibited for the very first time, as well as photographs of acrobatic gymnasts in unusual environments. The show is titled “Chiaroscuro” after a 15th century technique of utilizing extreme contrasts of light and dark in paintings which was mastered by Caravaggio. FUN FACTS
1240 Debras family history on English soil dates back to London, 1240. The first court records of John Doget, a tavern owner, from December 6, 1276 (Edward I), refer to him being a witness to a neighboring merchants murder discovery in a court hearing.
1661 Her family history on American soil dates back 1661. Reverend Benjamin Doggett, M.A. graduating from St. John’s College Cambridge graduating 1662 (England), and Rector of the St. Mary’s White Chapel Parish and of Christ Church Parish in Lancaster County PA 1670. The Doggetts are originally from Groton Sussex England and married in to the Duke of Norfolk family line.
1700’s Debra’s family descends from Colonial landowners and American Patriots who contributed to the Revolutionary War for independence from England. The family farm abutted President George Washington’s mother, Mary Washington’s farm.
1981 Debra receives a 35 Minolta camera, and a journey to Egypt, including passage down the Nile for her high school graduation. This was her first journey, as a young adult abroad, since her birth. She documented the journey at 17 years old, and still remains very close friends with four friends, all of the same age, from this trip.
1984 Debra meets Annie Leibovitz here in Atlanta, at joint art show opening featuring photographers Richard Scott Hill, and Annie Leibovitz at the Fay Gold Gallery. Richard Scott Hill is Debra’s father. Annie Leibovitz autographs and stamps the her hand print into the book with good wishes on the birth of Debra’s new baby, Christopher.
1985 Debra surprisingly meets Madonna, alone, with two of her massive body guards, at the Phoenix Athletic Club, (Ritz Carlton provider), prior to her “Like A Virgin Tour” concert. Madonna was very polite.
1989 Debra rides the tour bus with The Greg Allman Band to and from the concert hall, and sat backstage with her childhood (elementary years) & very best friend Sheila. Debra was eight months pregnant at the time with Thomas, her youngest son. Steppenwolf was a no show front band, the audience was restless.
1991 At the age of twenty six years old, Debra (Mills) Frieden was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives as a State Representative, being the second youngest female member of the House in Georgia history. She was sworn in at the age of twenty six. Referred to by GOP members as “The Prom Queen from Cobb County” and her Democratic colleagues as “The Democratic Darling.”
2000 Debra met her husband Kevin, after choosing a name randomly in AOL AIM’s Buddy List interests titled “computers,” to ask if he knew where to download some software for a printer. He replied, “Sure, hold on a minute.” He happened to work for IBM. They married 2 1/2 months later, and have been happily married since. “Bliss.”
2001 “The Debra Mills Commemorative Bridge.” The Georgia Legislature unanimously passes Resolution SR467 to name a bridge over Georgia’s Chattahoochee River, for Debra’s years of service(prior to, during and after being a public servant) on behalf of abused children, children in need and senior citizen advocacy & activism. It is a very rare honor to have this bestowed upon a living person. Debra was not aware of this honor being bestowed until after it’s passage. Hence the fact that Legislative Council nor the Sponsors noticed her educational college of note, was not The Atlanta College of Art which she attended. This fact still remains uncorrected to this day.
2009 Debras first set of Rasta portrait photographs are accepted and deposited into the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History.
Her father Richard S. Hill is in worldwide private and museum collections around the globe, a college Professor of Art, was tenured at the Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD). Debra has apprenticed under him and then formally educated as a college student, under his tutelage. He is most recently best known for his “Kessler Campanile” for more detail click here an 80 foot steel sculpture located on the Georgia Tech Campus and a focal point during the Olympic Games. Debra’s great Uncle, United States Senator Hugh Doggett Scott (R) was Minority Leader during the Nixon Administration. He also has only one of three rooms in the US Capitol building named after public servants. There are three, The Mansfield Room, The Kennedy Room and The Scott Room. He is buried at Arlington Cemetary with his wife Marian. He would bring Debra small unique gifts from his travels to other countries abroad. Although asked to be an Ambassador to China, he graciously declined to stay close to family. He loved Chinese art, and had authored several books one of which was called, The Golden Age of Chinese Art: The Lively T’ang Dynasty. Ruland, VT: C.E. Tuttle Co. 1967
