BE A PART OF HISTORY. HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!

Mission Statement: The goal is to historically document true Rasta and the Rasta culture through elegant, beautiful portraitures of the people, through photographic images to last for all time, much like Edward S. Curtis had done for the Native American Indian.

  • To archive within the Smithsonian Institution for purposes of historical documentation and education.
  • Register images with the U.S. Library of Congress
  • To document each individual. Compile each individuals information, including name, place of birth, and other personal information to historically document their personal history and marry it with each image for historical reference and accuracy.
  • To exhibit the photographs for the publics visual interest, education and enjoyment.
  • To encourage compassion, and understanding of the Rasta people, the culture and the history.
  • To encourage discussions about the culture.
  • To work with other institutions, public and private to accelerate the project to it’s full potential.

What: Historically documenting “true” Rasta through photographic imagery.

Where: Jamaica West Indies (phase I)

When: 2008 to current.  Next travel dates are in 2010.

Why: To assemble a large body of historic and accurate photo documentation of individuals who are Rasta.  To help debunk negative myths and help educate the public through visual interest by exhibitions, or other means to display images.  Promote healthy, more accurate discussions about the people and the culture.

How: Build on existing relationships within the community. Travel to the location of Rastas, and photograph them. Promote through contacting institutions, private and public, educational or cultural, social media, direct marketing, website, corporations interested in cultural diversity, and individuals on a personal level.  Submit for grants, endowments, private, public, corporate funding as well as accept and encourage private donations/contributions.

Budget Expenses:

  • Recompense to individuals for “sitting” for portraitures (goodwill)
  • Travel expenses to Rasta people, via plane, car, or other. Rastas live in many areas, but many live in the hills of Jamaica.
  • Equipment (minimal)
  • Printing of photographs
  • Exhibition costs of achieved body of work
  • Registration, and/or other business expenses for photographs including but not limited to archival, educational, or (other) exhibition purposes.
  • **The budgetary plan currently includes US based exhibitions.  We would very much like to exhibit in the Caribbean, and other locations. We will investigate this as a future option for a traveling exhibition.  This idea is an exciting one!
