American Photo Magazine Competition 2008 Why enter?
“Untitled” photograph to go up against the the famous?
It’s an interesting question not just for me, but other fellow photographers. Why enter? When previous winners are photographers with rich budgets for set design, makeup artists, locations, rented studios, travel expenses and celebrity personalities to spill out on their palettes ready to deliver masterworks. It takes courage to compete against such odds. They have paved their way, skinned their own knees and had their challenges climbing the same mountains at one point, but it is a genuine point of interest. Can other photographers rise above the monumental advantages of professional commercial photographers and compete on a level playing field? Dare we think a lesser known photographer with minimal resources can step out of the shadows of giants win? I actually get giggly when I think none of them really need the equipment offered as top prizes. It pales to their Mamiya’s, and Hassleblad’s. I only can hope they donate it to a well deserving photog assistant who is probably subsisting on ramen noodles because mac and cheese is too expensive. Competitions keep me focused in on my personal best. Therefore, important. American Photo Magazine holds one of the most deliciously rich competitions attracting the greatest photographers worldwide. Annie Leibovitz and Martin
Schoeller took top prizes last year. This is whom I am going to be discarded under the table for, but I will gladly take my place in line.
I love it all! I can’t stand on the sidelines and let them have all the fun! And neither should you! Deadline is mid September 2008.
